Maintaining an e-bicycle: Basic tips

E-bicycle tips

Maintaining an electric bicycle is essential for keeping it in good working condition and prolonging its lifespan. With proper maintenance, your electric bicycle can provide years of trouble-free use. In this blog, we will cover some basic maintenance tips that will help you keep your e-cycle running smoothly.

Clean e-bicycle

Keep it clean

Dirt and debris stuck in the various electronic components can quickly affect your e-cycle. Dirt is the number one enemy of the various moving parts present in the e-motor. Dirt even collects on the bicycle when left alone for long periods without use. Regularly cleaning your electric bicycle is important to remove this dirt, especially in a dusty region such as India. Since the components to be cleaned are electrical, do not use large amounts of water directly poured onto the bicycle. Instead, use a damp cloth or sponge to clean your e-cycle. A cleaner motor also provides more travel range than a dirty one!

Lubricate the chain of e-bicycle

Lubricate the chains

An e-bicycle tends to require more lubrication on the chains than conventional bicycles. This mainly happens due to the higher force and faster rotations experienced on an e–bicycle. Proper lubrication of the chain reduces friction and prevents it from wearing out quickly. Remember to clean the chain before relubrication for the most effective solution.

Check the brakes of e-bicycle

Check the brakes

Properly functioning brakes are crucial for your safety when riding an e-bicycle. Imagine going at a faster average speed than a conventional bicycle. This thrill of speed and convenience at a cost of higher wear on almost all components. Brakes on e-bicycles can tend to wear out at a rate at least 2 times faster than on regular bicycles. Keeping this in mind, it is recommended to regularly check the brakes and replace the pads as and when required.

Protect the Battery of e-bicycle

 Protect the battery

The battery is one of the main components of an electric bicycle. Proper maintenance of the battery can ensure a longer range per ride and longer life of the battery overall. The life of a battery can be increased by always maintaining a good amount of charge in it. If possible, use the battery only till it is at 20 – 30% charge. Put it on charge frequently since the battery management system protects it from over-charge anyway. When not in use, store the battery in a cool and dry place, preferably away from the sun. When storing for longer periods, remove the battery from the bicycle and keep it at a 50% charge rate to minimize the loss in battery life.

Inspection of the motor of e-bicycle

Inspect the motor

The motor is the main differentiator of an electric bicycle from a regular one. Inspect it regularly for any signs of wear or tear. The most common indicator is a sound coming from the motor as a result of too much dust accumulating inside or due to a lack of lubrication. This can cause the moving parts to wear quickly and permanently damage the motor. In such a situation, it is advisable to approach a local service shop to have the motor checked.

By following these simple tips, you can keep your electric bicycle in top condition and enjoy the ride for far longer than the warranty period. Regular maintenance will not only prolong the life of your e-cycle but also improve its performance and safety. Remember to always read the manufacturer’s instructions before performing any maintenance on your e-bicycle
